Home Sweet Home! The Milkmen open Routine Field, but fall into extra innings to RailCats
Rain couldn’t dampen spirits of the Milkmen or their fans, as 3,284 packed into Routine Field for the inaugural home game. The city council of Franklin threw the first pitch and a helicopter delivering the first game ball were among the highlights of the opening ceremony. It was an eventful night with Van “the Milkman” McNeil and Milkmen Mascot “BoVine” introducing us to a colorful cast of characters in the form of the Grassfed Family (Cletus, Granny, Mertle the Farmer’s Daugther) and Cheezer McGee, who helped bridge the innings with entertainment for the fans. Such spectacles included Cow races, the Milkmen’s take on famous sausage races seen at Brewers Games and a Streaker in the middle of the sixth inning. A 50/50 raffle and much more family fun was also present throughout the game.
As for the baseball, the Milkmen fell behind early to the RailCats 1-0 in the second inning off an RBI single by Raymond Jones. The RailCats added to their lead in the fifth inning with an RBI single by Colin Willis to make it 2-0. Milwaukee finally got on the board when Glen McClain hit his first home run of the season for the Milkmen in the seventh inning, a solo shot to make it 2-1. The Milkmen tied the game in the eighth inning after an RBI single by Dan Ward. The game went to extra innings, deadlocked until the 11th , when Raymond Jones got the winning run across with an RBI double.
The winning pitcher for the RailCats was Felix Carvallo, who secured the ninth and extra innings with three of the team’s ten strikeouts. The RailCats also left 18 men on base. The Milkmen had 15 team strikeouts, including five by Myles Smith, who unfortunately for the Milkmen was saddled with the tough loss.
